A bit about strings and tensions
Strings and Tensions.
At Advantage Sports all of our re-strings are done on our state of the art Wilson Bairdo Stringing Machine for an exact and precise re string.
We are aware there are numerous strings on the Market to choose from. Along with the varied tensions this can become quite mind boggling. So below we have set out a few guidelines. These will hopefully help you choose your string and Tension correctly.
Strings and Tensions will always be checked when we re string your Racket.
Strings for Control
Typically these are aimed at the Tennis player hitting the ball fairly hard and frequent string breakers. These strings are usually Polyester and a bit stiffer to multifilament strings. Therefore more durable and maintain tensions slightly better. Because the strings are slightly stiffer they perform better at a lower tension. Lower Tension for Power, Tighter for Control, so we advise not to go much higher than 54lbs tension on these.
Strings for Spin
Spin strings are similar to Control strings but have either a rough texture or slight angular feel to them. So they are designed to bite into the ball creating more Spin. Again these suit Hard Hitters and frequent string breakers. However there are options like Dunlop Black Widow and Solinco Tour Bite Soft which have a softer feel. Consequently they are not quite as stiff as some of the other strings. An ideal choice for those wanting some extra spin out of their game along with feel.
Strings for Power
Power strings are usually a bit softer and designed to give you better Control of the ball. Multifilament or Natural gut, ideal for all round players and those seeking more Power and feel. Strings of this nature have a bit more give so to get the best performance it is better to string on the tighter side 55/56lbs. Multifilament and Gut strings are also ideal for those suffering with Tennis Elbow or any other arm/shoulder injury. And this is because they are softer and don’t transfer as much vibration through the racket. In this case we recommend lowering the tension.
Strings and Tensions – Rule of thumb
Tighter gives you more Control and Slacker gives you more Power. If you are suffering from any Arm/Shoulder Injury or Tennis Elbow go for a lower Tension. A lower Tension does not transmit as much vibration through the Racket therefore more comfortable when striking the ball. Also choose a softer String.
All the above Information are guidelines and if you are unsure on what String/Tension to go for do not hesitate to contact us and we will gladly talk you through.
